Or you can just keep adding oil when it gets low, unless it smells like oil burning under the hood then I'd replace the seal ASAP. But if it doesn't smell and you don't need to add ...

However, you also need to check the distributor, the dip stick (as mentioned above) and the rear of the valve cover. These other areas can leak oil which will run down and cover the starter as well. Oil filter installation on the Patriot is no different than any other vehicle: tighten the filter until the gasket just makes contact, then tighten it another 3/4 to 1 turn. I agree with Terasec and you might have something unusual going on with your filter installation.
