Webb5 mars 2024 · The Falkenstein family has owned the Gutenfels Castle since the 11th century. As one of the many Rhine River castles used to charge tolls to transport goods down the Rhine River, Gutenfels Castle is very fortified. Since 1277, the castle served as a castle of the Electorate of the Palatinate. WebbOriginally built as a toll castle sometime around the year 1250, Stolzenfels Castle was destroyed during the War of the Grand Alliance in 1689. It was even used as a quarry. It wasn't rebuilt until King Frederick William IV ordered for plans drawn up by Karl Friedrich Schinkel to be followed in 1836.
